Classes
There are many classes at the York School of Defence. When we originally started our focus was primarily on medieval swordplay, however lead instructor Chris Halpin has practised and had a keen interested in grappling arts for many years, and when assistant instructor Lauren Ireland decided to return to her first love of Victorian and Edwardian antagonistics it added yet more variety to an already eclectic roster.
Although many of the arts that we practise are separated by hundreds of years of history we aim to try to practise arts that compliment or at least in some way inform one another. We are driven by the phrase 'the more you learn, the less you know' and we are constantly revising our interpretations as our understanding improves.
In martial arts everyone is a student, whether they have been training for ten days, ten years, or a lifetime.
